Mumbai: 125 booked for performing funeral namaz in public

MUMBAI: The

Dongri police

on Monday registered an offence against at least 125 people including

Saeed Noori

founder member of

Raza Academy

for performing a funeral namaz without keeping any social distancing despite police raising objection.

Interestingly Saeed Noori who is the founder member of Raza Academy had few weeks back made videos on behalf of Mumbai Police requesting the community to maintain social distancing.

Noori is also accused in the

Azad Maidan riots

.

According to the Dongri police, on May 7 Null bazaar resident

Babu Batawala

(72) died a natural death. He was affiliated to Raza Academy.

Police said that around 150 people gathered for his funeral. "Despite our request that they maintain social distancing they refused and took up arguments with the police official. Despite opposition they perform the Janaza namaz (funeral names) keeping the coffin on the road without maintaining social distancing," said Avinash Dharamadhikari, assistant commissioner of police (Dongri division).

Police have registered an offence against Saeed Noori, Salim Batatawala, Hasabhai, Munnabhai and 120 others under the IPC sections of 188 of disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant 269 of Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life and 270 of "malignant Act" likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life.
