MUMBAI: An association named Mobai Gaothan Panchayat (MGP) organised its 14th East Indian Community Awards ceremony at Aksa, Malad, on November 29. Categories included education, profession, religion, entrepreneurship, social service, and event organisers. The Uttan-based Jesus Band performed live, and a special East Indian dinner was served.

The East Indian of the Year 2024 award was given to Samir D'Monte, a city architect known for sustainable and community-centric projects. A CEPT Ahmedabad alumnus, he participated in the restoration of Bandra's Ranwar Village, the Carter Road promenade redesign, and Bandra (W) station. Active in citizen movements, he is also a trustee of Bandra Gymkhana.

The honour for Principal of the Year was presented to Fr Magi Murzello, Rector of St Andrew's College and Principal of St Andrew's School. He led the Mission Sunshine initiative to instil positivity among students. With multiple degrees, Fr Magi authored 'EduFocus' magazine and launched vocational programmes for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Heritage Church of the Year award went to the Cathedral of Grace, Papdy, Vasai. Built in 1565, this heritage church underwent a beautiful restoration. The altar is a masterpiece, and the restored relic of St Teresa is a highlight.

The Educationist of the Year award went to Chrison Shannon Kinny, an assistant teacher at St Mary's High School in Kalina, while the Sportsperson of the Year was Conroy Remedios, a superintendent at Mumbai Customs. The Dronacharya Award winner is a distinguished hockey player and coach who represented Mumbai Customs and top teams. He trains students free of cost.
