Thane: A 20-year-old man was found dead in a water-filled quarry near Betawade village in Diva Tuesday morning nearly 12 hours after he went missing the previous night, officials said.
Rescue teams suspect the victim, identified as Monu Solanki (20), may have entered the waters near Marathon Tower, alongside the railway tracks in Betawade, but may have failed to gauge its depth and could have drowned.
“The police alerted the civic rescue teams late Monday evening that conducted a search operation for nearly an hour but had to suspend it due to darkness and poor visibility. The search resumed on Tuesday with assistance from the fire brigade and disaster response personnel following which the body of the missing youth was spotted, retrieved and handed over to the police for further investigation,” informed Yasin Tadvi, in-charge at the Regional disaster management cell, Thane.
Police have registered an accidental death case and started further investigations.
Meanwhile, authorities have cautioned public against swimming in unguarded water bodies, especially during the
monsoon.
