Lord Carrington will deliver the13th Sir Dorab Tata Memorial Lecture on `International Relations in the New Century'' at the Tata theatre (NCPA), on Monday, April 3 at 6.00 pm. Ratan Tata, chairman of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, will preside. The Sir Dorab Tata Memorial Lecture series was instituted in 1960 by the trustees of the trust to commemorate the birth centenary of Sir Dorabji Tata, the elder son of Jamsetji Tata, founder of the Tata group. The lecture is delivered every two years, by internationally eminent persons in public life drawn from across the globe.

the lecture is delivered every two years, by internationally eminent persons in public life drawn from across the globe. the first lecture was delivered in 1960 by sir oliver franks, later by lord franks. among the others invited to deliver the lecture were lord bingham of cornhill, dr henry kissinger, sir john thompson, lord morrison of lambeth, bernard levin and dr elliot richardson. an active participant in british parliamentary affairs and international politics in the post-war period, the rt. hon. lord peter carrington has served as chairman to the conservative party, secretary of state of foreign and commonwealth affairs, minister of overseas department and secretary of state for defence. he also served as secretary-general of nato from 1984-88. lord carrington has been the british high commissioner to australia and served as chairman of the ec conference on yugoslavia from 1991-92. he was awarded the military cross for his service in the british army in world war ii. he has been a director of various banking and business concerns and is currently a member of the chase manhattan bank international advisory council. he was also chairman of the general electric company. he is currently, chancellor of the university of reading. he also holds the honorary degree of doctor of laws from cambridge and harvard universities. his autobiography `reflect on things past' was published in 1988. the trust was established by sir dorabji tata out of his personal wealth. it promotes and supports the institution and maintenance of educational institutions and hospitals, advancement of learning (especially research work in connection with medical and industrial issues), and other charitable activities. some of the pioneering institutions promoted by the trust are the tata institute of social sciences, tata institute of fundamental research, tata memorial centre for cancer research and treatment, the national centre for the performing arts, the national institute of advanced studies and the sir dorabji tata centre for research in tropical diseases. bombaytimes@indiatimes.com
