MUMBAI: On a high-pressure day, the BMC almost suffered a major embarrassment when the search-and-rescue team's boat, which mayor Datta Dalvi insisted on going up and down the Mithi river in, got stuck mid-stream and the mayor had to scramble to safety.Dalvi arrived at Kranti Nagar in Kurla on Tuesday afternoon, when the rescue team had begun evacuating families from the slum on the edge of the river.
Since the water was not too high, the team was helping people to safety on foot.
However, the team's motorised boat was also ready and Dalvi decided to take two trips (after the boat started with some difficulty) over a short stretch down the river, with slumdwellers and cameras watching from either bank. The boat was not performing any evacuations. On his third trip, a piece of cloth got stuck in the boat's motor and it stopped. The current in the swollen river was strong and firefighters were unable to row the boat, which was stuck near a small bridge over the river. Dalvi stood up on the boat and got onto the bridge, tilting the boat. The firefighters in the boat too had to hurriedly get on to the bridge. The boat remained stuck near the bridge, from where it was pulled out two hours later.
