MUMBAI: The crime branch control unit of the city's economic offences wing detained a surgical shop owner for allegedly selling counterfeit diabetes checking strips ‘One Touch' product.
“The accused person was caught red handed with the counterfeit diabetes checking strips. The original manufacturer of this product is a UK based company, Scan Scotland Ltd,. When we got the information, we first purchased one strip and sent it to the company for testing. The company in its reply said it was a spurious product,” said inspector Nitin Patil. After a thorough probe, police carried out a raid and seized 670 pieces of counterfeit One Strip, valued at Rs 5.02 lakh. Police will be sending the seized products to the forensic science laboratory for chemical analysis. The police said it was working to find out where the spurious diabetic checking strips were manufactured.
A team led by Patil and comprising personnel Rupesh Darekar, Eknath Desai and Ganesh Doiphode carried out the raid and detained Vijay Patel, 56, owner of a surgical shop and handed him over to the L T Marg police station.
The police took assistance from a company, Griffin Intellectual property service Pvt Ltd, which has the copyright for the said product in India. Yashwant Mohite, investigation officer of Griffin, lodged the FIR at the police station. Further probe is on.
