MUMBAI : The MSEDCL has got conviction in a case at Amravati court wherein the accused, a residential consumer, was caught in 2018 for 'manhandling' a staffer who had come to recover arrears for electricity bills. He has now been sentenced to three years imprisonment.

"The case pertains to 2018 when there was a drive conducted to recover pending electricity bill arrears," said MSEDCL chief spokesperson Anil Kamble. He said that a team had gone to the residence of Ganesh Talokar (52), a resident of Vishawanath colony in Amravati. They informed him that he should pay the bills, else face disconnection of power supply.

"But the man slapped our staffer, caught him by the collar and attacked him. He was injured in the incident," Kamble said. A case was registered with the Raja Peth police station, which subsequently filed a chargesheet in the court.

Kamble said that at present, several drives were being conducted across the Mumbai metropolitan region and in other districts. "The conviction will send a strong message to consumers, not to attack our staffers who are simply doing their jobs," he added.
