Imran Qureshi, the vice president of the community, in the letter stated that not only are the people who consume meat are suffering but thousands of workers associated with the abattoir industry have been rendered jobless.

The prices of red meat, particularly of goat and sheep meat has spiked to Rs 900 per kg and is not easily available in the market.

``The rates of mutton sold by unauthorised butchers have risen due to closure of the Deonar abattoir. Many people are eating chicken and fish and there is huge demand for mutton and buffalo meat. Meat slaughtering at Deonar is carried out under the supervision of veterinary doctors and is allowed to be supplied to the BMC markets and BMC licensed meat shops,’’ said Qureshi.

"We have sought permission from the municipal commissioner to restart the abattoir and we hope it reopen soon,"
Yogesh Shette, the general manager of Deonar abattoir, said.
