In a partial win for the medical community, the state government has stayed the earlier order of the Maharashtra Medical Council, issued under the direction of Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, that allowed homeopaths to register with the MMC and practice modern medicine. The stay came after the Indian Medical Association warned of protests. It was supposed to hold a day-long strike on Friday which was postponed on Thursday after assurances from CM Devendra Fadnavis. There is now committee set up which would submit its recommendations to the government within two months. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) had also voiced its concerns over lateral entry of homeopaths in modern medicine. In a letter addressed to Fadnavis, the doctors said the decision is a betrayal of the principles of medical regulation. "It threatens the lives of the people of Maharashtra and insults the tireless efforts of thousands of MBBS doctors and resident doctors," the letter read.
