Maharashtra Medical Council elections will be held on Sunday

Mumbai: Elections to the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), a statutory body responsible for regulating the practice of modern medicine in Maharashtra, will be held on Sunday.The last MMC elections were held in 2016, with the council elected at that time dissolved in 2022. The state has since appointed various administrators to manage the MMC till the Supreme Court directed in Jan that the elections should be held within three months.Sunday's elections for nine council seats have 60 candidates in the fray, with approximately 1.4 lakh doctor-members set to vote at the 36 polling centres across the state. One of the main polling centres in the city is at state-run J J Hospital, Byculla. The results will be declared on Wednesday. A senior doctor raised concerns over increasing political interference in the council's functioning. "A senior politician is holding a dinner get-together for doctors from Bandra on the eve of MMC elections. Such gestures were not seen before in MMC elections," he said.
