MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has announced a day of mourning on Thursday following the death of industrialist Ratan Tata.

He passed away at the age of 86 at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday night after a brief illness.

Ratan Tata, known for transforming the Tata Group into a globally recognized conglomerate, had his mortal remains transported from Breach Candy Hospital to his residence in Colaba, South Mumbai, early Thursday morning.

The chief minister's office released a statement, saying, "The national tricolour on government offices in Maharashtra will be flown at half-mast on Thursday as a sign of mourning."

The statement also mentioned that there would be no entertainment events on that day.

"This will be a state funeral as a tribute to Ratan Tata. During this period, national flags at government offices in the state will be lowered to half-mast and no entertainment or entertainment programs will be held," CM Eknath Shinde posted on X.


He also mentioned that Tata's remains will be available for public viewing at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai from 10 am to 4 pm on Thursday.

Shinde described Tata as a significant figure who had a unique blend of morality and entrepreneurship.



South Region additional commissioner of police Abhinav Deshmukh announced that there would be no parking facilities available at the NCPA venue.

He advised, "People will have to get off their vehicles at a dropping spot." He also requested those attending to plan their own parking arrangements.

Tata's last rites will take place later in the day in the Worli area of Mumbai.
