Longer locals, more relief: Western Railway begins work to extend 15-car locals up to Bandra

WR kicks off work to extend 15-car locals up to Bandra

Western Railway has begun work on a major capacity upgrade that will allow 15-car suburban local trains to run up to Bandra within the next eight months. This marks the first concrete step in a larger plan to gradually extend longer rakes further south to Dadar and eventually Mumbai Central, significantly boosting passenger capacity on one of the city’s busiest suburban corridors.

2/9

Ending the Andheri bottleneck

Currently, 15-car slow locals operate only between Virar and Andheri, as stations beyond Andheri lack platforms long enough to handle extended rakes. Bandra, a major interchange and commercial hub, has remained a critical choke point for years, especially during peak hours, forcing thousands of commuters into already crowded 12-car trains south of Andheri.

3/9

Four busy stations set for overhaul

To enable the extension, WR has launched infrastructure upgrades at four high-footfall stations — Bandra, Khar Road, Santacruz and Vile Parle. These stations handle massive daily commuter volumes and lie on a stretch that routinely experiences heavy crowding, making them central to the capacity expansion plan.

4/9

Platforms, tracks and signals being reworked

The ongoing works include extending platform lengths, realigning tracks, modifying overhead electrical equipment and upgrading signalling systems. Officials said these upgrades are essential to ensure that 15-car trains can operate safely and smoothly without disrupting existing services on the busy suburban network.

5/9

First phase of civil works underway

Western Railway general manager Vivek Gupta said the initial phase of platform expansion and associated civil works is progressing steadily at all four stations. Once this stage is completed and regulatory approvals are secured, the section between Andheri and Bandra will be ready to handle 15-car operations.

6/9

Longer locals to move further south

After Bandra, WR plans to extend platform upgrades to stations up to Dadar, followed by Mumbai Central. Officials said this phased approach is necessary to manage construction in dense urban areas while keeping suburban services running with minimal disruption to daily commuters.

7/9

Nearly 25% more passengers per train

Each conversion from a 12-car to a 15-car rake increases the carrying capacity of a local train by nearly 25%. While a 12-car local carries around 2,400 passengers, a 15-car local can accommodate close to 3,000 commuters, offering immediate relief during rush hours.

8/9

WR already runs over 200 such services

At present, Western Railway operates 211 services using 15-car rakes across its suburban network. Of these, 112 slow services terminate at Andheri, the southernmost station currently equipped to handle longer trains, underlining the need for rapid infrastructure expansion beyond this point.

9/9

Capacity upgrades across Mumbai railways

While WR advances its 15-car expansion, Central Railway is also extending platforms at 34 stations to accommodate longer trains. Currently, CR operates only two 15-coach rakes for limited services, highlighting the scale of infrastructure work needed across Mumbai’s suburban rail system to meet growing demand.

In 2012 Indian Government has proposed that all local trains running in Mumbai Region will be converted into fifteen coaches but up till now the project has not been completed what a shame, no timeline has been given for Central Railway and Harbour line that is between Wadala and Panvel minimum why this delay in Mumbai region and why step motherly treatment to and Central Railway and Harbour line on Central Railway.
