MUMBAI: Life Insurance Corporation chairperson Siddhartha Mohanty said that the corporation would waive the requirement of death certificate and relax its claim settlement process for victims of Balasore train tragedy.

"LIC Of India is deeply saddened by the tragic train accident in Balasore, Odisha on 02.06.2023. LIC Of India is committed to supporting those affected and will expedite claim settlements to provide financial relief," Mohanty said in a statement.

Mohanty, said this was aimed at mitigating the hardships of the claimants of LIC policies and also members of Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana.



"In lieu of registered death certificates, list of casualties published by railway authorities, police or any state or central government authorities will be accepted as proof of death," the statement said.

The corporation has set up a special help desk at divisional and branch level to respond to claim related queries and for providing assistance to claimants.

"All efforts will be taken to ensure that the claimants are reached out and claims are settled expeditiously to the affected families," the statement said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inspected the triple train accident site at Bahanaga in Odisha's Balasore district to take stock of relief operations. He was accompanied by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and was briefed on the situation.

The PM said: "It's a painful incident. Govt will leave no stone unturned for the treatment of those injured. It's a serious incident, instructions issued for probe from every angle. Those found guilty will be punished stringently. Railway is working towards track restoration. I met the injured victims."

PM Modi also said that special care must be taken to ensure that the bereaved families don't face inconvenience and those affected keep getting assistance they require.

The Prime Minister spoke to the Cabinet Secretary and Health Minister from the site. He asked them to ensure all help needed is provided to the injured and their families, said officials. PM Modi also said that special care must be taken to ensure that the bereaved families don't face inconvenience and those affected keep getting assistance they require.

​Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered a high-level probe into the accident. He visited the train accident site and said that the main focus now is rescue and relief operations. ​"A detailed high-level inquiry will be conducted and the rail safety commissioner will also do an independent inquiry," he said.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik on Saturday visited the site of the train crash to take stock of the situation on ground. He declared one-day state mourning in the wake of the deadly triple train crash.

​Rescue operations are under way at the crash site in full swing. ​Officials in Bhubaneswar said 200 ambulances, 50 buses and 45 mobile health units were working at the accident site, besides 1,200 personnel. Gas cutters were used to extricate the bodies from under the derailed coaches.

​Railway authorities on Saturday cancelled 49 trains, and diverted 38 trains onto a different route.
20 trains were also short-terminated in view of the incident.
