MUMBAI: BMC engineers toiled hard on Monday to repair two burst pipelines at Worli and Lalbaug. The pipelines were raptured by private contractors on Sunday morning while they were carrying out road construction work.
The water works department completed work on the line at Ranga Bazaari Chawl, Kalachowkie, on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road early on Monday morning and restored water supply.
However, the road department was yet to level the stretch back to motorable state by the evening.
On Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road in Worli, the length of the damaged portion, 60 m, made life difficult for the engineers. "The length of the damaged portion in Lalbaug was only a metre or two. But, here it is taking us a lot of time to repair the damaged portion due to its length,'' deputy municipal commissioner Pramod Charankar said.
The BMC has assured that the 12-inch pipeline in Worli will be repaired by Tuesday, ensuring water supply in the neighbourhood.
The rupture in the 48-inch pipeline in Lalbaug had caused flooding and disrupted water supply to places like King's Circle, Dadar and Lalbaug. BMC officials blamed an MMRDA contractor who started work on the foundation for an elevated road in Lalbaug and dumped stones near the junction between Dattaram Lad Road and Ambedkar Road. Officials have recommended action against both contractors.
