MUMBAI: A 60-year-old man who suffered a huge loss in his illegal business but put the blame on a Kuwait-based businessman he had met in 2013, and tried to extort money from him with the help of underworld gang was arrested by the Mumbai police.
The anti-extortion cell of the city crime branch arrested Zakir Sajjad Hussain, an Andheri resident, under IPC sections of extortion and threatening.
Underworld gangster Chhota Shakeel's henchman Javed Chikna, an accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts, has been shown as an absconding accused. Hussain had also issued death threats to the NRI. Police said Hussain indulged in illegal activities in Kuwait by selling CDs, tobacco and other banned medicines.
Hussain had asked the NRI to take him as a partner in his electronic business, but the complainant refused. In 2016, Hussain asked the NRI to cough up Rs 1.50 crore or face dire consequences. Subsequently, Chikna also called the NRI issuing threats.
