MUMBAI: City police have arrested a 59-year old Kolkata resident who promised a Rs 150-crore loan to film producer
Gaurang Doshi
and demanded Rs 1.5 crore to arrange it.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police on Sunday arrested
Ashish Kumar Sarkar
, a resident of
Mukundpur
area in Kolkata for cheating, forgery, breach of trust and criminal conspiracy.
Sarkar told Doshi he could arrange the loan from
Mauritius Bank
. Sarkar showed him fake documents to prove he had managed to get a loan of Rs 605 crore from a bank in Dubai. According to the police, Sarkar, in 2016, had introduced Doshi to a certain Subodh Dharkar. Sarkar used to run a financial consulting firm, Unimax, while Dharkar had a firm called Money Manager Pvt Ltd. Doshi was seeking a loan of Rs 150 crore for his upcoming films. Doshi told police some of the papers were signed by Sarkar as well Dharkar.
On learning the letters were forged, Doshi lodged a complaint with the EOW.
