KL Rahul, wife Athiya raise 1.93cr for children with disabilities

Mumbai: On a day he was training for the Duleep Trophy, Team India cricketer KL Rahul and wife Athiya Shetty raised Rs 1.93 crore in a cricket auction ‘Cricket for a Cause', specially organised to help needy children. The auction, held in the city on Friday, featured memorabilia donated by some of the legendary cricketers, for helping hearing-impaired and intellectually challenged children through the Vipla Foundation, located in BKC.The highest amount in the auction was fetched by superstar Virat Kohli's jersey, which went for Rs 40 lakh. The former India captain's gloves were sold for Rs 28 lakh. India captain Rohit Sharma's bat was sold for Rs 24 lakh, while former India coach Rahul Dravid's bat was sold for Rs 11 lakh. India's legendary two-time World Cup winning captain MS Dhoni's bat went for Rs 13 lakh, while KL Rahul's jersey was sold for Rs 11 lakh. KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty had last Saturday announced on social media about their charity venture titled ‘Cricket for a Cause' to raise funds for the Vipla Foundation. "Rahul and I are very excited to announce our first charity auction, ‘Cricket for a Cause' to benefit Vipla Foundation," Athiya said. "The auction, supported by our friends who generously donated their prized memorabilia, features some exceptional cricket items that are a part of our cricketing history," said Rahul. "The auction proceeds will go towards Vipla Foundation special school for the hearing impaired and intellectually disabled, which was started by my nani and is very dear to my heart. So spread the word, participate in the auction and support the Vipla Foundation in providing quality education to special children," concluded Athiya.
