MUMBAI: A two-year-old boy, who had been kidnapped from Dadar station and whisked away to Rajasthan, was rescued by the Government Railway Police (GRP) recently.
The accused, Pushpa and Samarsingh Chaudhary, had planned to sell the boy, Suraj Sahu, to a childless couple in Rajasthan for a hefty sum. They were arrested on Sunday.
Suraj is the only child of construction labourers Madhavi and Rajesh Sahu.
The Sahus were well acquainted with the Chaudharys, also construction workers.
On May 12, Madhavi went to meet the Chaudharys at Shivaji Park, where they stayed with their daughter Pooja. Pushpa told her that she was planning to travel to her hometown in Parbhani the next day. She also requested Madhavi to look after Pooja till she returned. The women decided to meet on May 13.
"Pushpa was to board the Dadar-Amritsar Express. At Dadar station, she asked Madhavi to fetch the tickets while she waited with Pooja and Suraj. But when Madhavi returned, the trio was nowhere to be seen," senior inspector Shivaji Shinde said.
On May 14, Madhavi and Rajesh went to Shivaji Park and met Samarsingh, who told them that his wife had already reached her hometown. A few days later, Samarsingh, too, went missing. Finally, on May 20, Madhavi registered a complaint of kidnapping against the Chaudharys with the Mumbai Central GRP.
A police team travelled to Parbhani and located Pushpa's father, Baburao Kulthe. But Kulthe told them that Pushpa hadn't visited him in five years. after since she got married for the second time to Samarsingh
The police then visited Samarsingh's hometown at Bharatpur in Rajasthan, but were unable to trace him. "Our teams went to Rajasthan thrice, but in vain. On June 20, Samarsingh called up the Sahus from a new cellphone number. He requested them to pack his belongings from his Shivaji Park home and send them to Mathura," an official said. The police tracked down his location to Kalsara in Rajasthan's Alwar district.
On June 22, the GRP reached Alwar and tracked down the house where the Chaudharys were holed up. But the Chaudharys got wind of the police presence and hid in a forest, leaving Suraj behind at home. With the help of the local police and residents, the GRP surrounded the forest, forcing the Chaudharys to surrender. The accused were remanded in police custody till June 30.
