MUMBAI: The Bhoiwada police on Sunday evening arrested a resident doctor of KEM Hospital on charges of rape, cheating and damaging hospital property.
Following preliminary investigations, neurosurgery resident doctor Rakesh Redhu, 31, was found guilty of raping a doctor—an MBBS pass-out of the same hospital— whom he promised to marry later fearing legal action.

According to the police, Redhu was "involved a romantic relationship" with the victim since a year. Senior inspector Vikram Patil of Bhoiwada police station said, "One night, Redhu brought the victim to his room and offered her drinks that he had spiked. He then raped her that night when the victim was unconscious. But, she found out about it the next morning.
"Fearing that the victim may go to police, Redhu allegedly promised to marry her. He continued to exploit her physically for the next six months," said Patil. This was until the victim decided to visit her native place and narrate the entire incident to her family members.
The victim's fuming brother and cousin came to the KEM Hospital and beat up Redhu. The hospital had lodged a complaint blaming the victim for the ruckus in the campus. But, she filed back a cross-complaint alleging rape against Redhu on February 13. "Preliminary investigations show that the charges are not wrong," said Patil.
