MUMBAI: Hrishikesh Kanitkar will coach the Indian women’s team in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in February in South Africa, TOI has learnt. It’s not clear yet if Kanitkar, who played two Tests and 34 ODIs, will continue in his role as the batting coach of the side, or he will be named as the interim head coach by the BCCI.

The BCCI had appointed Kantikar as the batting coach of the Indian women’s team in December for the home T20I series against Australia in Mumbai. India lost that series 4-1. “With the Women’s T20 World Cup now so close, it’s too late to appoint a head coach. The best option is to continue with Kanitkar in an interim role,” a reliable source told this paper. “The BCCI is likely to appoint a full-time head coach for the Indian women’s team ahead of the Bangladesh tour in June,” he added.

India set to play Test at home vs Aus in Dec

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team is set to play its first Test after more than two years-and their first at home in 9 years- when it hosts Australia at home in December.

“Post the inaugural Women’s IPL, India will tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series (ODIs & T20Is). The Indian women's team has a packed home calendar later this year. From September onwards, we will host New Zealand, England, and then Australia for a series each. The Australia leg will include a Test match as well,” the source revealed.
