She is one of the few women directors in

Hindi cinema

who has left a distinctly feminist stamp with offbeat pictures like Ek Pal, Rudaali, Darmiyaan and Daman as well as TV serial

Lohit Kinare

. Kalpana is the niece of film maker Guru Dutt.

Of late she has had to undergo dialysis four times a week which leaves her exhausted. Her mother, renowned painter

Lalita Lajmi

said, "She had a restless night, and early Monday morning, she rushed to the hospital even before I could join her. She is currently in intensive care and the doctors feel it could be a heart ailment this time. They are conducting various tests and we are hoping she will be discharged in a day or two.''

Kalpana informed PTI, "I was completely bedridden two years ago. But now I am slightly better by the grace of God. I will give myself another year and a half to walk all on my own without any help," she said bravely.

Sunday November 5 was the death anniversary of Kalpana's longtime partner, singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika. On Saturday she had travelled to Assam Bhavan in Vashi to attend a function in his honour. Bhupenda's sister-in-law is currently visiting Mumbai and staying with the family.

Members of the film industry including Aamir Khan, Rohit Shetty and trade institute IFTDA have come forward with financial support. Actor Arif Zakaria who played the protagonist in "Darmiyaan" said he had met her three months ago at a book launch. "She was ill then also but was taking things in good cheer. I wish her a speedy recovery," he said.
