MUMBAI: Just when the city was bracing for winter, a spike in temperature has brought back the heat and mugginess. The high humidity levels, up by almost 22% from the normal, have made even November sweltering.
Last year, around this time, the city was chilly, with lowest temperatures dipping to 14-15 degrees. The minimum recorded temperature was 24 degrees in Colaba on Monday.
Known to be cooler, Santa Cruz had a minimum of 24.8 degrees. The heat and humidity could not be missed as the city has been recording a minimum temperature of below 20 degrees in the last one week, with mercury dipping to even 17.6 degrees on November 20. The high humidity levels added to the heat factor.
Colaba recorded a maximum of 32 degrees and minimum of 24 degrees on Monday. Santa Cruz recorded an even higher 34 degrees maximum and 24.8 degrees minimum. Humidity levels were 98% and 84% for Colaba and Santa Cruz respectively. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said this was higher than the 90% and 73% readings for Colaba and Santa Cruz only a few days back.
"The moisture level in the air is high due to the sudden rain in south Mumbai. This is why humidity levels spiked, causing sweating and a muggy feeling," said K S Hosalikar, deputy director, IMD. He said the temperature rise was primarily due to cloudiness, which trapped heat.
The effect of the north-west monsoon has added to the impact.
Mumbaikars need not worry about an extended spell of heat. IMD officials said they expect clouds to disperse in two days.
"The city will get colder in two days," a weather bureau official said.
