MUMBAI: A chowk at Hirandani Gardens, Powai, was on Wednesday renamed and inaugurated as 'J Dey Chowk' in the memory of slain journalist Jyotirmoy Dey (1955-2011). Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar was present for the inauguration along with friends and family members of J Dey, besides several mediapersons.

J Dey was the Editor (Investigations) at Midday newspaper at the time he was gunned down on June 11, 2011, in Powai, barely a few feet away from the site now renamed as J Dey Chowk, which is opposite the Dmart supermarket.

Developer Niranjan Hirandani, who was present at the chowk renaming, recalled having met journalist J Day a few years ago when he was facing threats from certain criminal elements.

A member of the Mumbai Press Club said: "This is an honour for J Dey, and several other journalists who have been killed while doing their duty in recent times. Also, this is a reminder that the J Dey murder case is still open, and we want the main killers to be arrested.''

Several other citizens and journalists of print and television media paid their tributes to Dey and recalled how hard working and brave journalist he was.
