MUMBAI: The Kerala police along with the Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad on Saturday arrested a suspect,
Rizwan Khan , who reportedly forced a Kerala youth for religion conversion and asked him to join the ISIS. He has been sent to the transit remand till July 25.
He was arrested from Kalyan's Bazarpeth area. Two days ago the ATS and Kerala police had arrested
Arshi Qureshi in the same case.
Khan was detained on Wednesday and let off saying it was a case of mistaken identity. It's still not clear on what basis the police had earlier said it was a mistaken identity.
On Wednesday, the police arrested Qureshi and produced before the Vashi judicial magistrate first class court in CBD-Belapur on Thursday and the Kerala police obtained his transit remand. It is alleged that Qureshi was an office bearer of the controversial Islamic preacher
Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation .
TOI had two days ago reported that
Ebin Jacob (25), the brother of Merin alias Mariam who is missing along with husband Bestin Vincent alias Yahia, has told police that there was an attempt to
forcefully convert him into Islam and make him join the terrorist organization, IS. Ebin had told Kochi city police in a statement that Bestin and Qureshi were behind the attempted forceful conversion. Based on this statement, the Palarivattom police slapped charges under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on the duo and also booked them under Section 153 (A) of the IPC.
“As per the statement, Qureshi insisted that Ebin should embrace Islam and join IS. It was Bestin who compelled Ebin to come to Mumbai and meet Qureshi," Ernakulam ACP K V Vijayan, the investigating officer, had ealier told TOI. Ebin's statement said he was taken to Mumbai by Bestin, who had been indoctrinated with Islam at that time, in 2014. This could be the first case registered under UAPA against any of the 21 Keralites who had gone missing and allegedly joined the IS.
