MUMBAI: Two long-awaited concerts by Zubin Mehta in Mumbai next week have been insured for an undisclosed sum. The renowned conductor will perform at the NCPA on September 9 and 10.
The move assumes importance given the backdrop of protests over Saturday’s concert in Shalimar Bagh, Srinagar, which eventually passed off peacefully. The Mumbai organizers have sought an event cancellation policy from a private insurer, which will compensate them in case the performer fails to show up.

However, no money will be awarded should the concert be disrupted after it begins.
“We decided to insure the event because we owe responsibility to our sponsors who have pledged so much money. We cannot let them down,” said Mehroo Jeejeebhoy, founder trustee of the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation which is organizing the event. She declined to reveal the sum of insurance or the premium amount.
K G Krishnamoorthy Rao, managing director of the insurance firm, said, “Event cancellation cover operates in case the performer cannot appear due to accident or critical illness, or if the concert cannot take place due to terrorism or natural calamity. Once the concert starts, the coverage is over. It does not see you through till the end of the event.”
Jeejeebhoy is not dissatisfied with this clause, though. “Zubin Mehta’s performance in Japan was called off since the artistes were unable to reach owing to the tsunami. Not all disasters are man-made,” she said.
