IIT student held for rape of 13-yr-old specially-abled girl

Thane: Kalwa police on Thursday arrested a third-year student of IIT-Kharagpur, Adwait Khochare (23), for allegedly raping a 13-year-old specially-abled girl.

Police said the accused, who had returned to his Thane home for a study break, allegedly lured the girl promising her new clothes and sexually assaulted her. "When the girl revealed this to her ragpicker mother, the latter filed a complaint late on Wednesday. An FIR was registered and the student was arrested," said a police officer.

Police sources confirmed that the video of the sexual assault was recovered from Khochare's mobile phone. "His phone also contained photographs and videos of several girls. These recordings are not of sexual acts, but rather non-consensual images and videos," said a police officer. This prompted Kalwa police to broaden their investigation and they suspect that he may have targeted more women in the past.

Khochare has been booked under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and the Information Technology Act. On Thursday, he was produced before a local court, which remanded him to five-day police custody.
