The fact that I am a producer doesn’t mean that I have made a switch. I am still an artiste. I have just added another feather to my cap. I am working in the serials sHeena, Har Mod Par and Son Pari. There is also a new serial with Lekh Tandon and a film with Kalpana Lajmi on the cards. And, I also play a small role in Goonj Ateet Ki.
Though I am very busy with my commitments as an actress, I am a very hands-on producer.
As I handle only the creative aspect of the serial, I am involved in the scripting stage. Fortunately, I have a great director who is just as particular about details as I am. Ideally, I would have loved to start with a comedy serial but the problem is that we don’t have enough writers in this city. Getting a comedy that works is really tough.
My serial is about a family in Kerala. It has an element of the supernatural. Though the serial follows the industry rule which states that family dramas are the only ones that work, we have added a dash of our own flavouring and made it spooky. There is one thing that I am very particular about and that is — how women are portrayed.
There was a time when during the Banegi Apni Baat days, we used to think of what women would be like in the next ten years and then portray them. Unfortunately, the serials today paint a very regressive picture of women. In our serials, women are very advanced but, this doesn’t mean that we are preaching extra-marital affairs. I will take care to portray women realistically.
