HC: Let babus carry heavy bags to know kids’ burden

Mumbai: The Bombay

high court

on Monday said that one of the ways to get the state government to implement its order to lighten schoolbags is to get its officers to carry

heavy

bags to work.

A bench headed by Justice V M Kanade made the oral observation when informed that children continue to carry heavy

bags

to school. The court heard a public interest litigation by activist Swati Patil. Her advocate Nitesh Nevshe said only four out of 33 districts replied under Right to Information Act on whether the government resolution to implement a panel’s recommendations is followed. “Children still carry heavy burden,’’said Nevshe.

The bench expressed its disappointment saying once court orders are passed, the government must ensure they are implemented. “One possible way is to ask the very officers to carry their burden to their offices. They refuse to carry their bags,” said Justice Kanade.

The state’s advocate, Deepali Patankar, informed that its survey is on and a meeting was scheduled on the same subject on Monday. The bench then posted the matter to be heard on October 26, seeking details from the government.
