MUMBAI: The crime branch on Thursday invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against gangster Iliyas Bachkana and his five accomplices, who were recently arrested for kidnapping and for their attempt to extort money from a South Mumbai developer.
The Anti-extortion Cell of the city crime branch on Thursday invoked MCOCA against the six accused, Wajid Yasin Shaikh, Karim Wajid Khan, Alamgir Malik, Iliyas Aziz Khan alias Bachkana, Naushad Shaikh, Mazhar Shakir alias Shanu and Shafiq Shoukin Shah who is on the run.
Deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Raj Tilak Roushan said that the accused will be produced before the special MCOCA court on Friday. He said that they invoked the stringent sections on the gang as they are part of an organised syndicate, derived pecuniary gains and have previous chargesheet against the accused in the last 10 years. These are the preconditions for invoking the Act.
