MUMBAI: Four men have been arrested by the Samata Nagar police in Kandivli (E) after they abducted a young businessman and detained him in a car for over four hours. They had accused the victim, Neeraj Ruparel, of harassing a girl at a popular Khar pub and also threatened him. Senior officials said the four might have intended to extort money from Ruparel.
Investigations are on. According to the police, Ruparel (21) lives with his family in the western suburbs. While visiting a Khar-based pub regularly, he got friendly with a girl. The four accused, Pramod Sharma from Goregaon, Rahul Desai from Dhobi Talao, Sameer Shaikh from Santa Cruz and Sahil Jadhav, also used to visit the pub. They have known Ruparel for the last 1-2 years. On October 5, one of the men telephoned Ruparel and quizzed him about his whereabouts. Around 10 pm, they landed up at Akurli Road near Kandivli (E) railway crossing, where Ruparel was present. They then forced Ruparel into their car and took him to Santa Cruz where he was detained for four hours inside the vehicle. The four accused Ruparel of harassing the girl, who they claimed was like a sister to them. They threatened and released him the following morning.
A nervous Ruparel returned home, when one of the men telephoned him once again, and accused him of pocketing the girl’s chain and bracelet. They told him to return the valuables, or be ready to get beaten up. Ruparel’s family then registered a complaint at the Samata Nagar police station. The same night, on October 6, the police laid a trap and picked up the men from Akurli Road.
