Former Maharashtra health minister Deepak Sawant injured in road accident near Mumbai

Maharashtra's former health minister Deepak Sawant suffered injuries after his car was hit by a dumper truck on Mumbai-Ghodbunder highway on Friday.

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena leader and former state health minister Dr Deepak Sawant was injured when his car was hit by a dumper at Kashimira on Friday.
Sawant, who was seated on the rear seat of the car, sustained injuries in his neck and back. He was heading to Mokhada in Palghar district where deaths of two children due to malnutrition were reported.

Kashmira police arrested Irshad Khan, the driver of the dumper.

The dumper was also seized from the spot.
Police said the accident occured at around 11.30am.
When Sawant's car reached the Sagnai naka at Kashimira, the dumper that was heading from Kandivli to Kaman in Vasai crashed into the it from behind. Sawant's driver Vinod Saroj managed to control the car. He escaped unhurt. It is not known if Sawant was wearing the seat belt. Sawant has been admitted to the Criti Care Hospital in Andheri.
Police said Irshad Khan has been booked for rash and negligent driving. Police said they are examining closed circuit television footages.
Eye-witnesses said the dumper was speeding. It is being ascertained whether the dumper was carrying debris illegally.
Dumpers and trucks are known to ply on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway to dump construction debris illegaly.
