A man was killed and others injured in a cross-firing incident in Chunabhatti, 400 meters away from the local police station. The deceased, Sumit Yerunkar, suffered severe bullet injuries. MUMBAI: A 38-year-old man was killed, his two aides and two pedestrians are getting treated at the Sion hospital for bullet injuries that they suffered in a cross-firing between them and four others who split from them. The firing occurred on Sunday at around 3.15 pm at Azad Gali locality in Chunabhatti which is 400 meters away from Chunabhatti police station. In the incident, Sumit Yerunkar died before admission at the Sion Hospital.
A police officer said Yerunkar suffered severe bullet injuries leading to his death while his aide--Roshan Lokhande (30) sustained a bullet injury on his right thigh while a bullet shot hit the right hand of Akash Khandagale (31).

Yerunkar died after a bullet hit his stomach and two on his shoulder. The third person to be injured has been identified as Madan Patil (54) was hit by the bullet on his left hand while eight-year-old Trisha Sharma was hit on her right hand.
According to police sources, a total of 10 rounds were fired at Yerunkar who was killed and his three men got injured, their condition is said to be stable. Police are verifying whether it was cross-firing or the assailants were the ones that fired at the victims. Police reached the spot and three injured persons were rushed to the nearby Sion Hospital, where their condition is said to be stable. “The firing was a result of a personal rivalry,” said a police officer of the Chunabhatti police station.
Confirming the incident, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary said: “There is an incident of firing in which a person named Sumit Yerunkar got killed and three others are injured. All the injured persons are stable. The accused have been identified. A total of nine teams have been formed and they are searching for the accused persons. The reason for firing is personal rivalry.”
The incident has left the entire locality in shock. People were not ready to talk or narrate anything about the firing. A police officer said that the residents who witnessed the firing said that the entire area was with people and suddenly they heard bullet sounds. People in the locality started running helter-skelter and the entire area turned into a deserted look. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the assailants were once members of the Yerunkar gang. They split due to some personal rivalry,” said the police.
A senior police officer told TOI: “The exact motive behind the killing will be clear once the assailants are nabbed.”
A case of murder under the Indian Penal Code section and the Arms Act has been registered against the assailants. The police team is scanning through the closed-circuit television (CCTV) to track and locate the route that the assailants have taken to escape after firing.
