MUMBAI: A minor fire broke out at the food court of Oberoi Mall at Goregaon (E) on Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported as security officials at the mall acted swiftly and managed to evacuate a few of the employees who were in the building.
The incident occurred around 10am, an hour before the mall opens for business. Suhas Joshi, chief fire officer who inspected the site, said, “Luckily, the fire broke out before the working hours and that it was not a holiday or a weekend, or we would have had quite a chaotic situation.
If we find that the mall authorities ignored any safety guidelines, we will sternly come down upon them as they put a lot of lives in danger.”
Fire broke out in Maroosh, a restaurant at the food court, due to short-circuit in the kitchen. The fire was brought under control in 10-15 minutes; though the thick smoke had blurred visibility, making it difficult for firefighters to operate. The fire gutted about four of the food outlets on the mall’s third floor food court, triggering the automatic sprinkling system. As a result, some of the water seeped into the shops below the food court and damaged some goods. Though fire officials have said the blaze was caused by a short-circuit, they will conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The Dindoshi police have recorded the incident and are conducting inquiries to find out whether the fire was caused due to negligence.
