MUMBAI: Days after SP state president Abu Asim Azmi’s son Farhan Azmi said he would accompany CM Uddhav Thackeray to Ayodhya to build “Babri Masjid”, Azmi clarified he meant to say he would build the mosque on the plot the Supreme Court has asked the UP government to give to Muslims.
Farhan, who fought Lok Sabha and assembly elections in 2014, allegedly made the controversial statement at a “Constitutional Conference” organised by his NGO Parcham Foundation at Radio Club in Colaba on January 27.
“How can I build a mosque on the disputed plot now given to Hindus...I meant to say I’d join the CM in laying foundation stones for both temple and mosque. This mosque will come up on the alternative plot...I didn’t mean to stop Uddhavji...If he can go, I too can... And why can’t a Muslim visit the Ram temple site? Uddhavji should not fall into the trap created by the BJP.”
Legislator Abu Asim Azmi, whose SP is part of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi, distanced himself from Farhan’s statement. “I condemn his statement,” he said.
