'Engineering marvel': Viral video mocks 'narrow footpath' on Mumbai's Gokhale bridge; watch

MUMBAI: A video highlighting the narrow footpath on a section of Andheri's Gokhale bridge, which was fully commissioned in May, has gone viral, racking up over a million views.

The post, by the handle @IndianGems_ dripping with sarcasm, reads: "This is Rs 111-crore Gokhale Bridge, Mumbai, opened 2 months ago. Look at the size & design of the footpath. Engineering Marvel."

A reply to the post called it a one-way footpath, while another said that it seemed like the footpath was an afterthought.

In its defence, BMC pointed out that only a section of the footpath, and not the entire stretch, is narrow. "Also, a person can walk on it," said an official.



On July 3, 2018, the pedestrian section of the bridge collapsed, killing two people. In Nov 2022, it was closed for vehicular traffic and pedestrians owing to its poor structural health. Gokhale bridge saw a full opening on May 11. tnn
