Engineer killed, 4 teens injured in road mishap

An automobile engineer was killed and four teenagers were injured in a road accident in Jogeshwari (E) on Sunday.

MUMBAI: An automobile engineer was killed and four teenagers were injured in a road accident in Jogeshwari (E) on Sunday. The deceased who was at the wheel has been identified as Gururaj Mayekar (24). Gururaj was driving at a very high speed when the Chevrolet rammed into an electric pole on the Western Express Highway, the police said. Gururaj died on the spot.

Gururaj's younger brother Yash (13) and his friends Rishabh Shah (15), Chaitanya Gawde (17) and Girveen Rodrigues (15) were injured. Gururaj had taken Rishabh's father's car as they had decided to go on a joyride when the incident took place.
Gururaj Mayekar (24), the deceased, was at the wheel of a Chevrolet which was completely mangled in the mishap early on Sunday. Police officials said Gururaj was in excessive speed and banged the vehicle into an electric pole on the Western Express Highway, dying on the spot.
The other occupants in the car were Gururaj's younger brother, Yash (13), and his friends, Rishabh Shah (15), Chaitanya Gawde (17) and Girveen Rodriques (15).
The Chevrolet belonged to Rishabh's father who is a developer.
Gururaj was the only one in the group holding a driving license and was therefore asked to steer the vehicle. The group was out for a joyride.
Gururaj lived along with his brother at New MHB Colony in Borivli (W). is employed with Mahindra & Mahindra and lived in . He stays with Yash at the New MHB Colony in Borivali (W). Yash, Rishabh and Gervin are all school-goers while Chaitanya studies in junior college.

"Around 1.30 am on Sunday, the boys set out in the car. They drove down till Marine Drive in south Mumbai via Bandra-Worli Sea Link. On their way back, Gururaj stepped on the accelerator. He wasn't able to control the vehicle and it banged into an electric pole near Chacha Nagar at Jogeshwari around 5.15 amThe accident took place on the north-bound stretch of the highway near a flyover,'' the police said.
The intensity of the mishap was such that three wheels of the car got dismantled and were flung across the road. The bonnet of the vehicle was damaged and oil spilled everywhere on the street Gururaj was killed on the spot.
The injured were rushed to Cooper Hospital. They were treated and discharged later.
"A test was conducted on them to ascertain whether they were drunk but the results turned out to be negative. Whether Gururaj was drunk can be ascertained only after a forensic examination," an official said.
A case was registered against Gururaj on charges of 'causing death due to negligence', as he was speeding, putting the lives of the others at risk, officials said.
