MUMBAI: The Colaba police on Saturday arrested a mechanical engineer from Satara for allegedly murdering his wife. The accused, Shankar Yadav (28), worked at a fabrication unit in Satara.
Yadav, who was moving about in a suspicious manner, was picked up from the BEST Road junction near Electricity House. "He had masked his face with a towel. When we rounded him up for questioning, he couldn't give convincing replies," said an officer.
He was then taken to the police station for further questioning.
"After prolonged interrogation, Yadav admitted that he had murdered his wife in Satara on Wednesday
," he added.
Yadav's wife, Sunita (29), was a nurse at a hospital in Solapur. "The two would have frequent arguments.
On Wednesday night, the couple had an altercation, following which he hit her with a big boulder, killing her on the spot," the officer said. The Satara police had booked him for murder.
"After committing the crime, Yadav fled to Pune and then to Mumbai," he said. "Yadav is in our custody at the moment.
We will soon hand him over to the Satara police," said a senior police officer.
The couple had a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
Yadav who was moving in suspicious manner was caught by the cops at the Best Road Junction near Electric House. According to the police the accused had wrapped a towel across his face and was hesitant to answer about his motives when he was questioned. The cops then brought Yadav in the police station for further questioning. After a long hour of interrogation and out of fear, Yadav revealed that he had killed his wife with a huge boulder on the night of April 27 at their Satara residence. The victim Smita, 29 was a nurse and worked at Solahpur. "The couple used to have regular fights over Smita's decision of not staying at Satara and working there. On Wednesday night around 9 pm they again fought and this angered Yadav who hurled a huge boulder at Smita which killed her instantly. The Satara police booked him for murder" said an official.
Fearing by the thought of getting caught, Yadav then ran off to Pune the very same night and from there came to Mumbai where he was arrested. A senior official said, "Yadav is in our custody. We're waiting for further notice and will soon hand him over Satara police."
