11-year-old injured, three escape unhurt in Thane lift crash
Thane: An 11-year-old boy suffered minor injuries while three other occupants escaped unhurt after the elevator in which they were travelling, in one of the Raymond complex high-rise buildings in Pokhran 2 area, suddenly malfunctioned and collapsed inside the duct from the first floor late Monday evening, officials informed.Preliminary observations revealed the elevator rope suddenly and then snapped, leading it to crash land on the ground level. The incident was reported around 7 pm in the A-wing of the 40-plus storeyed Vista building when one of the five elevators, identified as P5, was ascending from the ground floor. Residents said they heard a loud thud and screams, following which they rushed to the spot and were horrified to see the crashed elevator with its internal steel and glass panels broken. The trapped residents were safely evacuated."There were four people inside the lift, including an 11-year-old resident who suffered minor injuries to his left limb. The other three occupants included a 30-year-old man staying on the 37th floor, and two unidentified labour working on the eighth floor," said Yasin Tadvi, in-charge at the Thane Regional Disaster Management cell.Meanwhile, hundreds of residents assembled within the premises after the mishap and questioned the malfunction as the complex was recently occupied. "We shudder to think of the consequences had the snag occurred when the elevator was at a higher floor," said a resident requesting anonymity. A few residents later marched to the Vartak Nagar police station to register a complaint.Civic officials said a detailed enquiry would be conducted. Meanwhile, Raymond Realty attributed the mishap to an unfortunate incident and said they were investigating the matter with the third-party equipment supplier. "We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our residents," a Raymond Realty spokesperson said.
