NEW DELHI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde took a spin in a Tesla outside Vidhan Bhavan a day after the US carmaker opened its first showroom in Mumbai.
Shinde was seen driving the car slowly amid a crowd of reporters and officials gathered on either side of the driveway.
The showroom — located in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) — was inaugurated on Tuesday by Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Tesla’s entry into India has been in the works for several years, with discussions on import duties and local manufacturing playing out in the backdrop.
The Mumbai showroom marks the company’s first major retail presence in the country, with plans for further expansion expected.
The launch comes at a time when the Indian government is actively encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles.
