MUMBAI: Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film Eklavya is out of the Oscar race. In fact, barring one, not a single Asian film has qualified in the list of the nine shortlisted in the Foreign Language Film Category for the 80th Academy Awards this year. Of the 63 films which were sent as entries, the race has narrowed down to Austria’s The Counterfeiters, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, Brazil’s The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, directed by Cao Hamburger, Canada’s Days of Darkness (Denys Arcand), Israel’s Beaufort (Joseph Cedar), Italy’s The Unknown Woman (Giuseppe Tornatore), Kazakhstan’s Mongol (Sergei Bodrov), Poland’s Katyn (Andrzej Wajda), Russia’s 12 (Nikita Mikhalkov), and Serbia’s The Trap (Srdan Golubovic).
Speaking about the nominations, director Anurag Kashyap said, "There are some strange omissions they have made like 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days from Romania and Persepolis, a French film, which is quite shocking."
