Indian Navy has decided to decommission Nilgiri class frigate INS Vindhyagiri that had sustained damages after collision with a merchant navy vessel on January 30, 2011.

Devendra Kumar Joshi, told reporters on board of INS Viraat, “We have spent Rs 9 crore to salvage INS Vindhyagiri. We generally try to extend the life of such vessels by a couple of years, but in this case it does not seem to be viable.”
Commissioned in 1981, the Nilgiri Class frigate ship was due to be decommissioned by end of 2012.
