MUMBAI: The CBI on Tuesday told the Bombay high court that the trial in the August 2013 killing of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar may take three months to conclude.

CBI’s advocate Sandesh Patel replied to a query from a bench led by Justice Ajay Gadkari. The agency opposed the bail plea of accused Virendra Tawade, who was arrested in 2016. Tawade has sought bail on the grounds of delay in the trial.

Patil informed that 15 witnesses have been examined and “some seven to eight witnesses” are remaining. Tawade’s advocate Virendra Ichalkaranjikar said his client has been behind bars since seven years and urged hearing of the bail plea on merit. The bench directed him to produce the evidence of the 15 witnesses at the next hearing after two weeks.
