MUMBAI: The
Mumbai Police will be a much better trained force in the coming years. Commissioner of police Sanjeev Dayal while addressing press conference said there were plans to give all policemen sophisticated and advanced training like army and navy personnel where the policemen will have to learnt compulsory swimming and physical training for recruitment. "After 26/11 there is urgent need to improve policing in the coastal region.
Beside this he said that there are more efforts on a dedicated cells to gather intelligence.
Dayal on Monday blamed the increasing population of city and migration for increase in the cases registered in the city. "In 1994 there were around 40,000 offences registered in the city but today it is 33,000 camparatively it is far less but the figures are not bad at all if you campare with the city's growing population and rate of migration but I believe that the detection rate also should keep the pace.''said Dayal while addressing a annual press conference. This annual press conference was called for first time after his predecessors stop this old traditional practice in 2006.
Dayal said that the police are more worried about the other type of crimes such as terrorism, intelligence alert, white collar crimes and cyber crimes. "If you see the cyber crimes campared to other offences, it has gone up 14 times as compared to last few years. Cyber crime and white collar crimes are trend in which more and more people from the upper middle class and middle class getting involved in.'' The cyber police station which was launched in 2006 had hardly registered 6 cases that year but in 2009-2010 cyber 76 cases have been registered.
According to the statistics 2009-2010 was like any other years with 33,645 offences were registered a marginal increase with the earlier year where 30,987 cases were registered in the city. Among those were 227 murders, 476 attempt to murder, House breaking thefts 3049, thefts 6,800, motor vehicle thefts 4167 and 2044 incidents of chain snatching. The rape cases registered in 2009-2010 (minor girls) was 140 out of which 133 were detected as compared to earlier year of 128 cases and 123 were detected "Overall the city is still safe for woman as compared to other cities as in most cases the rapist is the known person to the victim.
Dayal said that the gang related crime has drastically fallen down with underworld guns silent with only 8 shootout registered last year. He said that the crime branch has been successfully able to detect the major cases like the killing or Sayyed Madar Chand with the arrest of businessman
Mohammed Ali, murder of Farid Tanashah, murder of Asif Dadhi and Chhote Miya, deportation of Bunty Pandey, recovery of two dozen weapons and deportation of four foreigners who had fled away with diamond worth crores from the international exhibition show last year. Dayal said that the gang related extortion too have drastically fallen and now petty criminals and first timers are getting involved in the crime. Dayal said that vehicle thefts is also a major concern as city witnessed a large number of vehicle thefts whenever there were elections in any part of the country.
