MUMBAI: Two days after the body of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl
Karishma Chavan was found in an abandoned compound in Cuffe Parade, the police said they have zeroed in on a few suspects who have been detained and are being interrogated. Two months back, the body of a girl was recovered from the same spot.
The police said they were "100% sure" a "psycho killer" was behind the murders and they suspect he is a local resident.
The Crime Branch is also investigating the case now.
"We have formed three teams that will probe the murders from three angles. We cannot rule out human sacrifice but we are also looking into the possibility of it being a case of murder after sexual assault," said joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy.
The victim's three-year-old friend, who was playing with her at Sassoon Docks when she went missing on Tuesday afternoon, had told the police that a man with long hair had lured her away with some chocolates. Based on her statement, the police was trying to come up with the suspect's sketch.
Inspector S Mandlik from the Colaba police station said, "We have detained some people but the picture isn't very clear. The girl is very young and isn't able to communicate properly, and she sometimes gives contradicting statements. That is why the probe is taking long."
Cuffe Parade and Colaba police teams are conducting parallel investigations. The compound near Veej Bhavan, where the body was found, has been cordoned off and is being guarded by 20 cops from Colaba. "We have arranged for round-the-clock patrolling so that any suspicious person can be identified. There is also a security angle, since we don't want any more such incidents," said Mandlik.
The victim's family said they were not satisfied with the police probe.
