The report did not mention any sexual assault, however, the police said they would send her viscera samples for chemical analysis.
"We are treating it as a top-priority case and the results will indicate whether she was raped," said ACP (Colaba division) Iqbal Sheikh. The police also found a blood-stained boulder that may have been used in the killing.
Her family performed the last rites on Thursday. Residents of Ambedkar Nagar Colony are upset that patrolling was not stepped up even after the body of another girl was at the same spot two months ago.The family also raised doubts about the veracity of the post mortem report. "The hospital authorities and the police did not allow us to see the body head down and they had covered it. But Later we saw there were wounds on her arms and fingers and the flesh had completely been ripped off her right arm," said
Vijay Chavan, the girl's father.
Locals suspect the possibility of human sacrifice behind the two murders. A superstition in the area suggests that a person can be cured of HIV-AIDS if he sacrifices young girls. But police remain doubtful. "In case of the involvement of a tantrik, we would have found things like chillies, lemons, haldi etc. But nothing can be ruled out," said Sheikh.
He said there is round the clock patrolling in the area. Bandobast has been increased in the entire Colaba-Cuff Parade area. I have also contacted the Collector's office to find out the owner of the land. We will be coordinating with them to clear the bushes and seal the compound till the investigation is complete," said Sheikh.
"There is a possibility that the two murders are related. The girl's clothes were removed and we have found some stains on her underwear," said deputy police commissioner Chering Dorjee. "We have also collected some discarded clothes- pant, shirt, socks-
found near the crime scene and sent them for analysis," he added. Dorjee also said that they had questioned 10 people.
A three-year-old girl who was playing with Chavan at the time she went missing from Sassoon Docks on Tuesday afternoon told police that a man lured Karishma with chocolates and took her away. "Since she is a small child it is difficult to get a very clear picture. She has told us he had long hair and we are trying to get a sketch made on that description. We shall probe this lead carefully since the girl has no motive to lie," said Dorjee.
