Crime branch sleuths may get Abu Salem
MUMBAI: The Mumbai crime branch may finally get extradited gangster Abu Salem in its custody. A special court has issued a production warrant against Salem for his alleged complicity in the murder of Ajit Dewani, ex-secretary to actor Manisha Koirala, in 2001.
The warrant was issued last week by the special judge presiding over cases under the MCOCA on a plea made by the Mumbai crime branch.

The cops, however, will first have to seek the permission of designated Tada judge P D Kode who is hearing the 1993 serial bomb blasts case and was the first judge before whom Salem was produced after he stepped on Indian soil.
Salem is currently in the custody of Judge Kode but his custody is likely to be sought by others including the Delhi police for other cases.
Salem was extradited from Portugal to be tried for his role in the 1993 serial blasts and seven other cases including two Mumbai police cases.
The Ajit Dewani murder case is one of the two cases probed by the Mumbai cops. On June 30, 2001, Dewani was killed outside his office in Oshiwara by two gunmen allegedly belonging to the Salem gang.
Dewani had allegedly failed to pay extortion money to the gangster. Though the gunmen fled the scene, the police arrested accused Saheblal Giri and Deepak Singh from the airport.
Seven accused were arrested altogether and three including Salem were shown as wanted accused. Police suspect inter-gang rivalry behind the cause of the killing.
They are also investigating allegations that Dewani was killed following a dispute with Salem over overseas distribution rights of Hindi films.
