Mumbai lockdown news: Today's updates
The Maharashtra government announced extension of the general lockdown until July 31 with an aim to contain the Covid-19 surge. The notification issued by the state government has also restricted inter-district travel between municipal corporations within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to that for office purposes and essential activities like medical reasons.
*Update at 11.25pm: An assistant sub-inspector of the Mumbai Police on Sunday died due to Covid-19. "Mumbai Police regrets to inform about the unfortunate demise of ASI Suresh Ishwar Jadhav from D N Nagar Traffic Division. Shri. Jadhav was battling Coronavirus. We pray for his soul to rest in peace. Our thoughts & prayers are with his family," Mumbai Police tweeted.
*Update at 11pm: Expressing concern over rising number of Covid-19 cases, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said the government was planning to set up sample testing laboratories in all districts. Thackeray has inaugurated a Covid RT-PCR laboratory in Jalna city in Marathwada via video conferencing from Mumbai.
*Update at 10pm: With the single-day spike of 2,152 new cases, the Covid-19 tally in Maharashtra's Thane district crossed the 55,000-mark on Sunday, a senior official said. The number of positive cases now stand at 55,304, he said.
*Update at 9pm: The number of Covid-19 cases in Palghar district reached 9,349 on Sunday as 308 people tested positive for novel coronavirus, while the toll reached 178 as 23 people succumbed to the infection during the day, an official said. Vasai-Virar municipal limits account for 7,613 cases, while the rural parts have 1,736.
*Update at 8pm: With 1,263 new Covid-19 cases being recorded on Sunday, Mumbai's case count has mounted to 92,720, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The number of fatalities has gone up by 44 to 5,285, it said in a statement.
*Update at 7pm: Maharashtra's Covid-19 case count rises by 7,827 to 2,54,427; fatalities mount by 173 to 10,289, PTI quotes state health department.
*Update at 6pm: Five new Covid-19 cases reported in Dharavi, taking total number of cases to 2,375 in the area. 38 new cases have been recorded in Dadar, while Mahim saw a rise of 10 cases today, ANI quotes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
*Update at 5pm: BMC screened 30 staff of Bachchan family and asked them to quarantine themselves at premises of four bungalows of the family. BMC declared the four bungalows as containment zones and sealed them.
*Update at 3.15pm: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, daughter Aaradhya test positive for coronavirus, PTI quotes Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope.
*Maharashtra’s focus shifts to Kalyan, with hopes of emulating Dharavi model. The plan is to conduct door-to-door surveys with the help of volunteers.

*ANI update at 1.46pm: Sanitisation work being carried out in the premises of Raj Bhavan (Governor's residence) in Mumbai, after at least 18 people tested Covid-19 positive.
*In Navi Mumbai, the APMC wholesale market and Thane-Belapur TTC industrial area, along with essential services, will continue functioning during the lockdown, said civic chief A B Misal.
*The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has now extended its lockdown period till the midnight of July 19. Commissioner A B Misal said that this extension was necessary to control the pandemic situation.
*Update at 12.30pm: Eighteen personnel at Raj Bhavan in south Mumbai have tested coronavirus positive, a civic body official said on Sunday.
*For the last 25 days, the toll due to Covid-19 in Maharashtra has been rising by 1,000 deaths every fifth day.
*ANI update at 11.36am: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials put a banner outside 'Jalsa', the residence of actor Amitabh Bachchan in Mumbai, to define it as a containment zone.
*With increasing traffic, particular at night, Mumbai Police warned citizens of stern action if they are found defying curfew, except for emergency services.
*ANI update at 10.51am: Sanitisation workers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) arrive at 'Jalsa', the residence of actor Amitabh Bachchan in Mumbai. Actor Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan tested Covid-19 positive and both have been admitted to a hospital.
*Update at 10.03am: 28,637 Covid-19 cases and 551 deaths in India in the last 24 hours. Total positive cases stand at 8,49,553 including 2,92,258 active cases, 5,34,621 cured/discharged/migrated 22,674 deaths, reports ANI quoting ministry of health
*A 57-year-old assistant municipal commissioner from the BMC’s H-East Ward (Bandra East and Santacruz East), succumbed to Covid-19 on Saturday afternoon.
*Maharashtra on Saturday reported its highest single-day tally of cases (8,139), Mumbai, in contrast, looked slightly stable with the daily update showing 1,284 cases and 39 deaths in the past 48 hours. The financial capital’s total tally is now 91,745 cases (including 22,782 under treatment) and a death toll of 5,244.
*After Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Thane city, Kalyan-Dombivli and Mira-Bhayander on Friday, more cities, towns and rural parts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region announced an extension of lockdown on Saturday.
*Navi Mumbai, Shahpur, Murbad, Ambernath, Kulgaon and Badlapur will be under lockdown till July 19.
*Ulhasnagar will be shut till July 22, while Panvel, which is under lockdown till Monday, is still to announce an extension. Vasai-Virar has been spared another round of lockdown so far.

*The present doubling rate of Covid cases in Thane is 20 days, as 6,132 cases were reported as on May 20 that shot to 12,053 by June 9, stated latest civic records.
