THANE: A jail constable fell unconscious after a convict banged his head against a barrack wall at the Thane prison on Friday morning. The victim, Mohan Joshi (53), was admitted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai in an unconscious state.
The accused, Sachin Shinde (30), was sleeping at 6.15 am in the hospital barrack when Joshi, along with constable Vijay Bansode, visited him.

“Though it was 6.15 am and the inmates are required to get up by 6 to start their daily chores, the prisoner (Shinde was lodged in a separate cell) was found sleeping. The policemen tried to wake him up, and in doing so, removed the blanket. This apparently infuriated Shinde, leading to the assault,” said jail superintendent S N Chavan.
“We have lodged a complaint of grievous hurt against Shinde with the Thane city police. It was a sudden attack and Joshi sustained a skull fracture,” said S P Yadav, DIG, prisons (south region). The prison authorities do not have any strategy in place to deal with such attacks.
Jadhav, who wears the batch of buckle number 1 (serial no 1), was critically injured when Shinde banged his head against a wall. When Bansode tried to intervene, he too found himself at the receiving end of Shinde’s anger. Bansode was admitted to the Thane civil hospital and is said to be out of danger. Joshi fell unconscious because of loss of blood.
Shinde, who faces a three-year jail term in a case of culpable homicide registered by the Mumbai police, is undergoing treatment for a mental disorder. He has already served a term of two and a half years.
