Lalita Salve

(29), who has sought reinstatement in the force as a male cop after a

sex change surgery

, wants to counsel people with similar condition.

The 29-year-old constable from

Beed

had created a sort of stir with an application seeking permission to undergo a sex reassignment surgery and get reinstated as a male cop, on Friday told TOI that she would have committed suicide if her family had not supported and stood by her.

"I have had bitter lessons. I have now decided to counsel people with similar condition," said Lalita, who now prefers to be referred to as Lalit.

People comfortable reaching out to her were welcome to her hometown in Beed, she said, adding that if needed, she would travel to their places and assist them. In September, she had sought a month's leave for the surgery. The police denied her permission on November 20. She moved the Bombay high court on Thursday.

"There are many people like me who suffer just like me. Fearing social stigma and also because of lack of knowledge, they rarely open up. I fear many of them might commit suicide," she added. "I am fortunate to have a supportive family and know that not all parents in the country would have the same mindset," Lalita said.

Her uncle, Arjun Urgaje said, "After going through Lalita's ordeal, we decided to guide people with people with similar condition."
