Contractor appointed for Metro III car depot ignores protests by environmentalists

MUMBAI: Ignoring objections from environmentalists,

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation

(

MMRC

) has awarded final works contract for construction of car depot at Aarey Colony.

The depot is being constructed for 33.5 km

Metro III

(Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) corridor. Around 3130 trees are going to be affected due to depot coming up on this land admeasuring 30 hectares. MMRC's Director (Project) SK Gupta said, "Howevs, the depot will come up on a plot admeasuring 22 hectares. Three more hectares will be used for station. The balance 5 hectares will be left untouched where there are around 1073 trees."

The car depot is designed for 35 rakes of 8 cars and will be constructed at a cost of Rs 328 crore. The work is expected to be completed in two and half years by M/s Sam (India) Builtwel Private Ltd.
